The Asbury Park Fire Department is a career department that employs around 55 firefighters who protect a population of approximately 15,000 residents over an area of about 2 square miles. The APFD also provides emergency medical service on the BLS level. Asbury Park, like many others along the Jersey Shore, is known for its boardwalk and beaches, which attract many tourists every year. Asbury Park is also known as the place that famed musician Bruce Springsteen got his start.
The Asbury Park Fire Department was formed in 1876. The earliest companies were Wesley Engine & Hose Company No. 1, Neptune Engine Company No. 2 , A.R. Cook Hose Company No. 3 and Independence Hook & Ladder Company No. 1.
